Aksu Günay

Born in Ankara in 1986, Aksu Günay holds a degree from the Department of Photography at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. The artist builds her practice on the layers of the image and the problematic nature of "meaning" under the hegemony of the eye. In a modern world where other senses are often paralyzed and meaning is reduced solely to the sense of sight, Günay questions this unidirectional state of existence and the politics of the gaze.

Placing the "body" at the center of her practice, the artist treats it not as an object of desire, but as a living space of memory and the most intimate bond between the past and the present. Günay posits that the meaning in her works finds completion only when the body is integrated into the composition.

Drawing from experimental methods such as pinhole photography alongside digital techniques, the artist focuses on the optics of the image rather than its chemistry. Through reflections on water, the interplay of shadows, or the pure images emerging in a camera obscura, she investigates the most immediate and optical states of the image.
